Track & Field recruiting: FAT timing vs. hand-timed PRs, indoor vs. outdoor, and the new 45-athlete roster cap.

Track and field has a recruiting math problem unlike any other college sport — a single D1 program fielding athletes across 18+ events historically funded out of 12.6 men's and 18 women's equivalency scholarships. The 2025-26 House settlement replaced that with a 45-athlete roster cap. And FAT vs. hand-timed PR distinctions remain the recruiting trapdoor that costs recruits the most attention from coaches.

Track and field has a recruiting math problem unlike any other college sport. A single D1 program fields athletes across roughly 18 events on the men's side and 19 on the women's, and historically had to fund all of them out of 12.6 men's and 18 women's equivalency scholarships. The math said no event group ever got generously funded, and the conversations about partial scholarships in college track were tighter than in almost any other sport.

That math just changed for 2025-26 — and the FAT-vs-hand-timed distinction, which has always been the recruiting trapdoor, became more important than ever.

The new 45-athlete roster cap (post-House)

For most of the modern era, D1 men's track and field had 12.6 equivalency scholarships and D1 women's track and field had 18 equivalency, split across roughly 18 events plus distance running. Most "scholarships" were small partials. Full rides were reserved for the very top recruits in marquee events.

Under the 2025-26 House v. NCAA settlement, scholarship limits were replaced by roster limits — 45 athletes per gender for D1 track and field, with the option to fund up to all 45 with athletic aid. Some Power-conference rules add their own roster caps below 45 (men's SEC roster cap is reported at 35, for example). Cross country is separate and has its own caps (commonly cited as 17 men / 10 women in SEC).

The practical implications:

D1 cross country has its own roster caps that differ by conference. Ask the specific program for current funded structure rather than assuming.

FAT vs. hand-timed — the recruiting trapdoor

The single biggest recruiting mistake in track and field is putting a hand-timed PR on a recruiting profile without labeling it.

FAT (Fully Automatic Timing) uses an electronic system synchronized to the starter's pistol. The clock starts the instant the gun fires and reads to the hundredth of a second. Every NCAA championship meet, every conference championship, and every major invitational uses FAT. FAT times are the only times college coaches accept without verification.

Hand-timed uses a stopwatch and a human starting it on the gun's flash and stopping it at the finish line. Reaction time adds roughly 0.24 seconds on average. A hand-timed 11.0 in the 100m is roughly equivalent to an FAT-timed 11.24 — and coaches automatically add 0.24 to any time labeled "h" (hand-timed) on a recruit's profile.

The places coaches trust track times:

A "personal best" recorded at a small dual meet timed by a parent with a phone stopwatch is treated as marketing copy, not data. Coaches will ask "where did you run that time?" before they engage.

Indoor vs. outdoor — the question every recruit gets asked

Most track events exist in both indoor (banked or flat 200m oval) and outdoor (400m oval) versions, and the times differ. Indoor times are typically slower in sprints (200m, 400m) because of tight turns and shorter straightaways. Outdoor times are typically faster for sprints. Distance events differ in feel and pacing across the two surfaces.

When a college coach asks for a recruit's PR, they are asking for both — the indoor PR and the outdoor PR, with the meet name attached to each. A 22.5 indoor 200 and a 21.8 outdoor 200 are not the same athlete on paper, even though they may be the same athlete in fact.

Recruits should track both. The recruiting profile should list both.

How coaches read times across event groups

Track and field coaches recruit by event group, not by overall ability. A program needs sprinters, mid-distance, distance, hurdlers, jumpers, throwers, and pole vaulters — and the recruiting bar varies by event. A 4:08 mile and a 14.3 110m hurdles are both meaningful D1 numbers for their respective events even though they look unrelated.

The honest version: there is no single D1 cutoff time across track and field. The relevant question is always "what is the bar for my event at programs at my target level?" — and that bar is found by looking at the slowest scoring athletes on conference championship rosters, not by asking generic recruiting services.
