Recruiting Guide

Track & Field recruiting — the honest version.

College track & field recruiting — pure marks and times, event-specific evaluation, and the deepest scholarship math in college athletics.

College track & field recruiting is the most quantitative recruiting in college athletics — your seed marks and times in your specific events drive everything. Coaches recruit by event group (sprints, distance, throws, jumps, multis). This page covers the realistic timeline, the marks that matter by event, the division landscape, and how track's unusual scholarship structure works.

The realistic recruiting timeline

Freshman
Build verified marks through high school competition. Watch state rankings, MileSplit, and Athletic.net.
Sophomore
D1 active recruiting begins for top marks. NCAA permits formal contact September 1 of junior year (verify current calendar).
Junior
Heaviest D1 recruiting year. Junior-year outdoor marks are the most-cited reference points. Official visits available.
Senior
NLI signing. Late D2, NAIA, JUCO recruiting continues through summer.

Measurables that actually matter

Coaches filter recruits on a small set of numbers before they ever watch your film. These are the measurables that drive the conversation in Track & Field recruiting:

Note on ranges: The D1 typical ranges below are commonly-cited industry benchmarks based on recent recruiting cycles. They're a reference point, not a current-year source-of-truth. Verify against published commit data from recruiting media and sport-specific scouting services (Perfect Game, MileSplit, etc.) for your current cycle, and treat coaches' direct evaluations as the final word.

100m / 200m / 400m times (sprints)
D1 typical: event-specific
D1 men typical: 100m 10.5-10.8, 200m 21.2-21.8, 400m 47.0-48.5. D1 women: 100m 11.6-12.0, 200m 23.5-24.2, 400m 53.5-55.0. D2/D3 typically 0.5-2.0 seconds slower.
800m / 1500m / 5K times (distance)
D1 typical: event-specific
D1 men typical 800m 1:50-1:55, 1500m 3:55-4:05, 5K 14:30-15:15. D1 women 800m 2:08-2:14, 1500m 4:30-4:42, 5K 16:50-17:30.
Throwing marks (shot/discus/javelin/hammer)
D1 typical: event-specific
D1 men shot typical 17-19m+, discus 50-55m+. D1 women shot 14-16m+, discus 45-50m+. Event-specific recruiting.
Jump marks (long/triple/high/pole vault)
D1 typical: event-specific
D1 men HJ 2.05m+, PV 5.00m+, LJ 7.30m+, TJ 15.00m+. D1 women HJ 1.78m+, PV 4.00m+, LJ 5.90m+, TJ 12.50m+.

The division landscape

D1 track & field has 300+ programs. D2 has 250+. D3 has 400+. NAIA has dozens. JUCO is a strong developmental pathway — many D1 sprinters and distance runners come through JUCO. Many programs are dual men's/women's rosters with separate scholarship allocations.

Scholarship counts by division

Division Scholarship reality
NCAA Division I (men's) The old 12.6-scholarship cap (combined XC + indoor + outdoor) ended with the House settlement (2025): track rosters cap at 45 per gender, every spot fundable full or partial; cross country carries a separate 17 cap. Partials remain normal.
NCAA Division I (women's) The old 18-scholarship combined cap ended with the House settlement (2025): 45-athlete track roster cap, all spots fundable; XC caps separately at 17. Funding varies by program.
NCAA Division II 12.6 men's / 12.6 women's equivalency.
NCAA Division III Zero athletic scholarships.
NAIA 12 equivalency scholarships.
JUCO (NJCAA) Varies; many JUCO track programs offer real scholarships.

The showcase and recruiting circuits that matter

Not every event is worth attending. These are the circuits with consistent college-coach attendance for Track & Field:

MileSplit / Athletic.net rankings
National and state-by-state ranking platforms. Coaches use them to filter recruits by mark.
Adidas Outdoor / Brooks PR Invitational
Top national HS track meets attended by D1 coaches.
New Balance Nationals (Indoor / Outdoor)
Premier national HS championships.
AAU Junior Olympics
Major national HS-age competition.
College ID camps
Event-specific direct evaluation. Less common in track than other sports — most evaluation happens via marks.

Where Lightning fits

Lightning supports a multi-sport profile by default — so a Track & Field recruit who also plays another sport doesn't have to pay extra or hide it. Your verified Track & Field measurables flow into a college-coach-searchable database. Parent-controlled visibility lets middle-school families build profiles quietly without exposing kids to premature recruiting pressure.

At $25/yr for the base tier and $50/yr for Pro (with AI-drafted college outreach), Lightning replaces the $1,000-$3,500/yr that recruiting services like NCSA charge for similar functionality.
