Most families either chase 5 dream schools or blast 300 generic emails. Both fail. The working recruiting process runs on a structured target list of 30–50 programs across three realistic bands — and it gets built from your verified numbers, not your feelings. Here's the method.
Ask a family early in recruiting which schools they're targeting and you usually get one of two answers: a list of five famous programs the athlete grew up watching, or "we're open to anything." Both answers produce the same outcome — a recruiting process with no structure, outreach that goes nowhere, and a senior-year scramble.
The working alternative is a target list of 30–50 programs, built deliberately, sorted into three bands, and used as the engine for weekly outreach. Here's how to build one.
Five schools is a wish list, not a strategy — if two lose interest and one changes coaches, the process is over. Three hundred schools means nothing personal can be sent to any of them, and coaches delete generic mail on sight.
Thirty to fifty programs is large enough to survive the normal attrition of a recruiting cycle — coaching changes, roster needs shifting, programs going quiet — and small enough that every email you send can mention something real about the program it's going to.
The list gets built from level-matching: where do athletes with your verified measurables actually play? Not your best-day numbers, and not the numbers you plan to have next year — your current, tested, verified numbers.
If you haven't been tested recently, that's step zero. Current numbers are the entire foundation; a list built on stale or inflated numbers aims your whole process at the wrong level.
A program only belongs on the list if you'd actually attend the school. Filter every candidate through: academic fit (does it offer what you want to study, and can you get admitted?), financial reality (what does it cost after realistic aid — not after fantasy scholarship math?), distance (will your family actually see you play?), and campus environment.
Families skip these filters early and pay for it late — a scholarship offer from a school you'd never attend is a distraction, not a win.
The list is not a document; it's a schedule. Five to ten personalized emails a week, working through the match band first. Each email references something specific about the program. Each response, camp invite, or silence gets logged, and the list gets re-sorted monthly as real interest data comes in.
Programs that respond move up. Programs that stay silent after two well-spaced attempts move down. By mid-junior year the list should be visibly reshaping itself around the programs that are actually engaging.
Your numbers change, coaching staffs change, roster needs change. A target list built freshman or sophomore year and never touched again is stale by junior year. Re-run the level-match against your newest verified numbers each season and let schools enter and leave the list without sentiment.
Lightning's College Matchmaker builds the starting version of this list from your verified profile — surfacing realistic programs by division, region, and academic profile — and the Recruiting Tracker keeps the whose-turn-is-it status on every program as your outreach gets moving.
