College coaches filter recruits by numbers. Specific numbers. If you can't quote your athlete's 60-yard time, exit velocity, vertical, or pitch velocity, you're missing the language of recruiting. Here's what each measurable means, what the benchmark numbers actually are, and which ones matter for your sport.
Most families understand "stats" as game stats — batting average, points per game, goals. College coaches care about those too, but the filter they actually use first is measurables: standardized athletic metrics that don't depend on which league you're playing in or how strong the competition is. A 90 mph fastball is a 90 mph fastball whether it was thrown in California or Iowa. A 6.7-second 60-yard time is a 6.7 anywhere.
This is why coaches ask for measurables first and game stats second. Game stats can be inflated by weak competition; measurables can't.
1. 60-yard sprint time. The single most-quoted athletic benchmark in baseball recruiting. Measured from a baseball-style start (one foot back, ready position). Run the 60-yard distance, time stops when chest crosses the line. The 60 also matters in softball, football skill positions, and lacrosse.
2. Exit velocity. The speed of the ball as it leaves the bat. Measured with a radar gun or a portable hit-tracker like Rapsodo or Pocket Radar. The most important power metric in baseball and softball recruiting because it isolates raw bat speed from quality of contact. A 90 mph exit velocity off a tee at age 16 tells a college coach you have legitimate power, regardless of whether you've hit any home runs in games.
3. Pitch velocity (fastball). Top-end fastball velocity from a radar gun, measured at the release point. The single most-watched metric in pitching recruiting. Pitch velocity tracks roughly with age and physical development; college coaches care about peak (best of the day) more than average.
4. Vertical jump. Standing vertical and approach vertical. Measured by jumping and touching the highest point you can reach, then subtracting your standing reach. The headline athleticism metric in basketball, volleyball, and football. Also referenced in track and field.
5. Pop time (catchers). Time from the moment a catcher receives the pitch until the throw arrives at second base. Measured in seconds with a stopwatch. The make-or-break catcher metric for D1 and D2 recruiting.
6. Wingspan / standing reach. Less commonly discussed but heavily weighted in basketball and football (especially defensive backs and receivers). Coaches think of wingspan in addition to height because a 6'2" athlete with a 6'8" wingspan has functional length closer to 6'6".

The accuracy and credibility of a measurable depends on how it was measured and by whom. Self-timed 60s — where someone in your family runs a stopwatch — are heavily discounted by college coaches because they're systematically faster than reality. Baseball pitchers: Fastball velocity, off-speed velocity, strike percentage. Coaches will watch a pitcher with elite velocity even if other things are rough.
Baseball catchers: Pop time, framing (less measurable but observed on film), arm strength, throwing accuracy.
Baseball middle infielders: 60-yard time, defensive footwork on film, arm strength.
Baseball corner positions: Exit velocity, in-game power, arm strength.
Football skill positions: 40-yard time (football's equivalent of the 60), vertical, shuttle run, broad jump.
Basketball: Height, wingspan, vertical, lateral quickness. Game film tells the rest.

Soccer: Less measurable-driven than the others. Game film and tournament performance dominate. Some programs reference VO2 max and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery tests.
Swimming: Sport-specific PRs by event are everything. Cuts (qualifying times) are the gating threshold.
This isn't a training article, but the headline pattern: most measurables respond to specific training. Speed and explosive power (60-yard, vertical, exit velo) improve with sprint work, plyometrics, and posterior-chain strength training. Pitch velocity improves with long toss programming, weighted-ball protocols (carefully — these have injury risk), and full-body strength. Pop time improves with quick feet drills and throwing partner work.

If your athlete's measurables don't fit a division, no amount of profile optimization gets them recruited at that division. The numbers are the floor. A 7.2-second 60 outfielder targeting D1 is targeting wrong; that 7.2 fits D3, NAIA, and JUCO. Read on divisions and target where the measurables actually fit.
