Soccer recruiting: the ECNL vs. MLS NEXT split and the new 28-player roster math.
The league a soccer player picks at 14 quietly decides which college coaches see them at 17. ECNL is the college-recruiting circuit. MLS NEXT is the pro-pathway circuit. The fit is different for boys vs. girls. And the 2025-26 House v. NCAA settlement just rewrote D1 men's soccer scholarship math from 9.9 equivalency to a 28-player roster — a bigger shift than most families realize.

Basketball recruiting: which AAU circuits college coaches actually attend, and what wingspan-to-height really means.
Basketball recruiting at the elite level is concentrated in a handful of summer events run by Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour — and which team a recruit plays for on which circuit quietly decides how many D1 head coaches will ever see them play. Plus: why wingspan-to-height ratio matters more than raw inches, and an honest look at the late-bloomer myth.

Lacrosse recruiting: the September 1 junior-year rule, the Mid-Atlantic funnel, and the IWLCA showcase calendar.
Lacrosse recruiting is geographically concentrated, calendar-locked by an NCAA rule that hit the sport harder than most, and operates through a small number of showcases where most D1 evaluation actually happens. For families outside the traditional lacrosse corridor, understanding these three pieces upfront prevents a lot of wasted travel and a lot of pressure to commit too early.

Football recruiting: 40-time skepticism, the FBS-to-FCS scholarship shake-up after House, and how 7-on-7 changed evaluation.
Football recruiting changed more between 2024 and 2026 than in the previous two decades. The House v. NCAA settlement rewrote scholarship math for both FBS and FCS, 7-on-7 became a primary skill-position evaluation environment, and the long-standing 40-yard-dash skepticism became sharper as families started asking for verified numbers in writing. Three things to understand before recruiting season heats up.

Wrestling recruiting: why state placement and the Walsh Ironman matter more than club resume — and the academic-D3 conversation.
Wrestling recruiting runs on a narrow set of trusted evaluators. State tournament placement and a small list of national tournaments drive most of the D1 conversation. And the academic-D3 and Ivy picture matters more in wrestling than in almost any other sport because so many top wrestling programs are at schools where athletic scholarships aren't on the table.

Track & Field recruiting: FAT timing vs. hand-timed PRs, indoor vs. outdoor, and the new 45-athlete roster cap.
Track and field has a recruiting math problem unlike any other college sport — a single D1 program fielding athletes across 18+ events historically funded out of 12.6 men's and 18 women's equivalency scholarships. The 2025-26 House settlement replaced that with a 45-athlete roster cap. And FAT vs. hand-timed PR distinctions remain the recruiting trapdoor that costs recruits the most attention from coaches.

Swimming recruiting: why the clock is more honest than any other sport's measurables, and what Olympic Trials, Junior National, and Futures cuts mean.
Swimming is one of the few college sports where the recruiting evaluation is brutally objective. The clock doesn't lie, there's no projection, and the time-standard tier a swimmer has cleared (Futures, Junior National, Senior National, Olympic Trials) tells coaches almost everything they need to know about where the recruiting conversation starts.

Hockey recruiting: the USHL and NTDP pathway, the 20-year-old freshman reality, and how the six D1 conferences carve up talent.
College hockey recruiting works on a different timeline than almost any other NCAA sport. Most D1 hockey freshmen are 19 or 20 — not 18 — because the path runs through junior leagues (USHL, NTDP) that develop players for one to three years after high school. Understanding that pipeline, and the six D1 conferences that recruit from it, is the difference between hitting the right events and chasing a path that doesn't exist for the recruit's level.

Tennis recruiting: UTR as the only metric coaches actually use, and the international-roster reality at D1 programs.
College tennis recruiting is more standardized around a single metric than any other college sport. UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) is the rating coaches actually use — a national high school ranking or state placement matters less. The recruiting funnel is also global: D1 rosters carry substantial international representation, and the path to higher UTR runs through ITF junior events more than through US high school play.

Golf recruiting: the AJGA star system, in-state bias, and the new 9-player D1 roster cap.
College golf coaches recruit off tournament resumes, not handicaps. The AJGA star-tier system anchors the recruiting calendar. In-state recruiting bias runs harder in college golf than in almost any other D1 sport. And the 2025-26 House settlement put a 9-player roster cap on D1 programs — the smallest cap of any team sport.

Field hockey recruiting: the Northeast funnel, the National Hockey Festival, and the 12 → 27 roster shift.
D1 field hockey is geographically narrower than almost any other NCAA sport — Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Connecticut dominate roster pages. The USA Field Hockey National Hockey Festival each Thanksgiving is the single biggest recruiting tournament. And the 2025-26 House settlement replaced the historical 12 scholarship cap with a 27-athlete roster — one of the biggest structural shifts of any women's college sport.

Gymnastics recruiting: Level 10 vs. Elite, SEC dominance, and the new 20-athlete roster cap.
D1 women's gymnastics is one of the few college sports where Olympians routinely choose college over professional careers. The Level 10 vs. Elite distinction in J.O. gymnastics maps directly to recruiting outcomes. The SEC has dominated the sport's recent history. And the 2025-26 House settlement replaced the historical 12-scholarship cap with a 20-athlete roster — recruiting math compressed.
