Maine HS athletics runs through the MPA with a 2025-27 basketball reclassification (Class A/B/C/D/S) that re-shaped the small-school path. Geographic spread, NEPSAC private-prep parallel governance, and a stricter 45-day SOPIPA deletion SLA are the operating environment. Lightning for Schools is built for MPA athletic directors: Maine SOPIPA + Student Information Privacy Act-compliant student-data handling and pricing with 10 included coach seats plus low-cost extras.
Built for MPA
Governing Body
Maine Principals' Association (MPA)
Member-school eligibility rules, classification, and championship workflows shape what an athletic department needs from its software. Lightning for Schools is configured to support MPA-aligned workflows out of the box — not generic NFHS templates that don't map to your state's specifics. Reference:

Student Data Privacy
Maine Student Information Privacy Act (MRS Title 20-A, Chapter 13) + Maine SOPIPA (LD 454)
Maine's Student Information Privacy Act (MRS Title 20-A, Chapter 13) plus the Maine Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (LD 454 / SP 183, 2015; amended 2017) regulate how online operators, educators, and third parties can collect and use student personal information in Maine K-12. Online operators must delete a student's personal data within 45 days of receiving a school administrative deletion request. Lightning's data-handling practices are built to meet these requirements; a vendor that can't speak to your state's privacy framework should not be on your shortlist.
What Maine athletic directors actually deal with
- MPA approved a major basketball reclassification (effective 2025-27) — Class A (670+ students), B (450-669), C (225-449), D (100-224), and a new Class S for schools under 100. Class AA (the former largest tier) folded into the new Class A. ADs at small rural Maine schools now have a distinct postseason path that didn't exist before.
- Geographic spread is real — Aroostook County and Down East Maine ADs face travel logistics for league play that Portland-metro programs don't. MPA scheduling and bracket geography reflect this; midweek travel is constrained by daylight, weather, and the size of regional athletic budgets.
- NEPSAC private prep schools (Hebron Academy, Berwick Academy, Bridgton Academy, Gould Academy, etc.) run a parallel recruiting circuit feeding Ivy + D3 (and select D1) programs outside MPA governance. ADs at MPA public programs adjacent to NEPSAC schools navigate two recruiting calendars.
- Maine SOPIPA requires online operators to delete student personal data within 45 days of an administrative deletion request — a stricter timeline than most state SOPIPA-equivalents. Athletic-department vendor contracts should reflect this deletion SLA.
