A recruiting profile is your athletic resume — verified stats, academic info, contact details, headshot, basic film. A highlight reel is the trailer — 2–3 minutes of your best plays. Both serve different parts of the recruiting funnel; one without the other is incomplete.
What a recruiting profile is for
The profile is the entry point. When a college coach hears about you (from your email, from your high school coach\'s call, from a tournament report), they search for your profile. They\'re looking for:
- Verified stats by position
- Grad year, height, weight, position(s)
- Academic profile (GPA, test scores, intended major)
- Highlight film link
- Game film link (full game, not highlights)
- Contact info — yours and your parent\'s
If they like what they see in the first 30 seconds, they go deeper.
What a highlight reel is for
The reel is the second touch. After the coach scans your profile, they click the film link. The reel should answer: "Is this kid worth a deeper look?"
- Length: 2–4 minutes. Anything over 5 minutes loses attention.
- Order: Best play first. Coaches give 15 seconds before deciding whether to keep watching.
- Format: One sport, one position. Don\'t mix positions in the same reel.
- Editing: Tell the coach what they\'re watching — name on screen, jersey number, position, what just happened ("3-2 fastball, line drive to LCF").
- No music dubbed over. Or if you must, leave the original audio so coaches can hear bat contact / ball pop / coach calls.
What college coaches WON\'T watch
- 10-minute reels. They\'ll click off at 60 seconds.
- Reels with slow-motion intros and graphic packages that hide the film.
- Mixed-position reels. If you play SS and pitch, make two reels.
- Highlight-only reels with no game-film link. Coaches want to see you in the flow of a real game, not just the moments where you made a play.
The game-film link matters more than the highlight reel
By junior year, the question coaches ask is not "is this kid talented?" — your verified stats already answered that. The question is "does this kid play hard between the plays?" That answer lives in game film. Make sure your profile has a link to one or two full games, not just the highlight cut.
