The binding contract that finalizes a college athletic commitment. Different from a verbal commit — the verbal isn't enforceable, the NLI is.
The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is the document that legally finalizes an athletic recruitment. Administered through the Conference Commissioners Association and accepted by all NCAA Division I and Division II member schools (Division III, Ivy League, and service academies do not use the NLI). Signing the NLI commits the athlete to attend the named school for at least one academic year and obligates the school to provide athletic aid for that year.
A verbal commit is a non-binding statement of intent. Either side can change their mind. An NLI is a contract. Once signed, the athlete cannot be recruited by any other NLI-participating school, and breaking the agreement carries real consequences (typically sitting out a year of competition if you transfer without a release).
The NLI has two main signing windows for most sports:
Football has its own structure: early signing in December, regular signing in February. Basketball has separate spring and fall windows. Always verify the current cycle\'s exact dates with your sport at NLI\'s official site.
Does: Locks in athletic aid for one academic year. Stops other NLI-participating schools from recruiting you. Confirms the school\'s commitment.
Doesn\'t: Guarantee playing time. Guarantee a multi-year scholarship. Guarantee admission — academic admission is a separate process.
If the coach who recruited you leaves, or your circumstances change materially, you can request a release. Release decisions are at the school\'s discretion. Athletes who break an NLI without a release typically must sit out one full year of competition at their new school before becoming eligible.
