How to size a youth bat (without buying three wrong ones first).

Most families buy bats backwards — by age chart, then by what the best kid on the team swings. Here's the sizing that actually works: weight your kid can control, length that fits their height and stance, and the certification stamp your league requires.

Walk into any youth dugout and half the bats are wrong — too long, too heavy, or illegal for the league. Families buy by age chart, then by whatever the best hitter swings. Here's the order that actually works.

Weight first — the one-arm test

Have your kid hold the bat one-handed, arm extended straight out to the side, for 20–30 seconds. If the barrel shakes or drops, it's too heavy. Bat speed beats bat mass at youth ages: a lighter bat squarely on the ball out-hits a heavy bat late, every time.

Length second

Stand the bat next to your kid: knob at mid-hip is the classic starting point, then adjust by feel in the cage — contact hitters usually happier slightly shorter, bigger kids with strong hands can carry length. A store swing tells you more than any chart.

Certification third — before you pay

Your league requires a specific stamp on the bat, and the wrong stamp is an illegal bat at any price. Check the league's current rule (they change), then shop only within that stamp.

Don't buy "to grow into"

An oversized bat builds a long, slow swing your kid then spends seasons unlearning. Size for now — and make that affordable by buying used: bats depreciate fast, and last season's model with the right stamp performs the same.

The honest part

The $400 bat is not why the travel team's cleanup hitter hits bombs. Reps are. Size correctly, buy used without embarrassment, and spend the difference on cage time.
